Georgia DOE Honors OCHS

In early September, Open Campus High School (OCHS) was recognized by the Georgia Department of Education as one of the state's top ten most improved schools.  This honor and recognition was given to OCHS for meeting and exceeding the standards for the state's curriculum tests, which were administered last spring.    In fact, Open Campus High School was one of two schools in Carroll County that made the state's list.  Out of 19 students who took the Georgia High School Graduation Test in the area of math, 84 percent of those students met or exceeded the state's curriculum standards, which is more than a 15 percent increase in success from last year.

Mrs. Bonnie Robinson, Principal of Open Campus High School, not only credits her math instructors (Mike Strain, Ed Sears, and Dana Ray) for this honor, but also credits part of the success to the special Friday night study session the school held last spring.  The study session provided in-depth tutoring opportunities, which were offset by some fun activities.  "We fed them," noted Robinson.  "We did some karaoke.  We had kids singing.  We had kids playing basketball.  But that was just the short part of it.  The majority was spent preparing for the test."  Principal Robinson also attributes the small class size for allowing the teachers to get to know the students better and help them individually.  She also notes that OCHS students are not students with behavior problems nor do they lack motivation.  "If they've made the choice to come here on their own, they are motivated," she added.  Those students who achieved the high pass rate were recognized at the school's first quarterly dinner.

OCHS Students visit

The students of Mrs. Jan Hembree's World Literature Class visited the Anne Frank Exhibit at the University of West Georgia.  They also studied a memoir by Gerda Weissmann, a Holocaust survivor, entitled "All But My Life."
